Chick lit of yesteryear is on my mind this week. It all started when I came across a 1901 book review for Babs the Impossible by Sarah Grand. In the words of the reviewer: “A book by Sarah Grand is always sure of a welcome” and the following short excerpt suggests why that might be the case:

“Miss Spice, dressed in virginal white muslin, is wet to the skin and cut to the soul, not by the use of water, but by the expressive “Cats”.”
‘Cats’, it appears is a type of swear word. But it’s ‘wet to the skin and cut to the soul’ that caught my imagination. I’m on my way to download a copy and the good news is it’s free.
