Room by Emma Donoghue is one of those novels that everyone was talking about in 2010 and I’ve yet to come across anyone who didn’t say they found it a page-turner. Don’t be put off by the grizly subject – a mother and child confined to a single room after the mother was abducted and her child born in captivity. It is a grim back drop but the relationship between mother and son is inspiring and uplifting. The child’s voice is sustained beautifully throughout the novel. This is a fast read but the story and characters remain with you. Recommended.
